Applying for radon measurement in the workplace

The business manager is responsible for the radioprotection of his/her workers who are liable to be exposed to ionising radiation in their establishment. This provision is also aimed at self-employed workers who are responsible for their own radiation monitoring.
Each worker who is liable to receive an annual radiation dose in excess of 1 mSv (millisievert) must be subject to radiation monitoring.
To evaluate the dose of radon received, a full measurement must be performed to determine the concentration of this radioactive gas.
For existing businesses, radon testing must be performed before the end of 2028. For new businesses, radon testing must be performed within 3 years of initial occupation of their premises.
Who is concerned?
Radon testing must be performed in:
- all workplaces located in the radon zone. This zone encompasses the cantons of Clervaux, Diekirch, Redange, Vianden and Wiltz;
- all special workplaces in Luxembourg – namely:
- underground workplaces; and
- the following buildings:
- educational establishments, including residential buildings for boarders (boarding schools);
- establishments catering to groups of children under the age of 6;
- establishments providing health, social and medical services, with residential facilities;
- spas;
- prisons;
- other establishments that are open to the public and provide facilities for regular and extended stays.

Costs
For a radon test, the Radiation Protection Division charges a fee of EUR 50 per exposimeter. This fee also includes the provision of the detector, a laboratory assessment and a measurement report.
Fees are to be paid by wire transfer to bank account number LU13 1111 0011 4679 0000, bearing the reference "Mesures du radon & company name".
How to proceed
Filing an application
The manager of the establishment, or the manager in charge of staff safety appointed by the latter, must apply for an exposimeter using the order form.
The completed and signed application should be submitted to the Radiation Protection Division by e-mail at: mesureradon-radioprotection@ms.etat.lu.
The manager should determine the number of exposimeters required based on the criteria set forth in sections 4.1.2 and 4.1.3 of the "Guide to radon measurement in the workplace".
Supporting documents
The applicant must include proof of payment of the fee with their application.
Types of exposimeters
The exposimeters provided by the Radiation Protection Division are radon-sensitive solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). Each exposimeter is provided in a gas-tight bag.
Measurement
Measurements should be performed between 1 October and 30 April of the following year, over a period of at least 2 months. The measurements should be taken at a time when the occupancy rate of the building is close to its annual average. For buildings that are normally occupied, the vacancy rate should not exceed 20% for the selected period.
The forms enclosed with the exposimeters should be filled in and returned with the devices.
Measurement reports
The Radiation Protection Division will produce a measurement report, which will be sent to the establishment within 40 days of the end of the measurement period.
The report will include an interpretation of the results in light of the current legislation.
Follow-up
If the reference level of 300 Bq/m3 is exceeded, the establishment must implement the measures provided for in the applicable regulations.
