Re-registering a vehicle after it has been temporarily deregistered

Last update

In Luxembourg, the owner or holder of a motor vehicle can request the re-registration of said vehicle, provided the vehicle was temporarily deregistered beforehand.

Who is concerned?

Any owner/holder of a vehicle registered in Luxembourg who had their vehicle temporarily deregistered.

Prerequisites

A vehicle may only be re-registered—i.e., put back on the road—if it had previously been temporarily deregistered, in the course of which process Part I of the Certificate of Registration was returned to the National Society of Automotive Traffic (Société nationale de circulation automobile - SNCA).

The vehicle can only be re-registered if the owner has not changed.

Costs

Re-registration

No tax is due when a vehicle is re-registered with the SNCA.

Road tax

The Customs and Excise Agency determines the tax due on the basis of the data registered by the registration authorities and according to the applicable rates. The amount of the tax due is communicated to the tax debtor.

The Customs and Excise Agency (ADA) now offers the activation of the eDelivery function for road tax invoices. All invoices relating to road tax (Autosteier) can now be issued in electronic format (PDF) in the private eSpace on MyGuichet.lu.

To benefit from this service, interested parties must subscribe to the eDelivery function. The subscription can be made via the MyGuichet.lu private eSpace under 'My data'" in the 'Transport' section, under 'Road tax' (Autosteier). This step is necessary to receive the ADA invoice in the electronic mailbox of the private eSpace.

Moreover, it is now also possible to receive the road tax disc by electronic means. You will need to activate the specific eDelivery function for this. Once the invoice has been paid, the road tax disc will be sent and you can print it out and keep it in your vehicle.

When you receive the new message and the road tax disc in your private eSpace, you will be notified by email.

How to proceed

Submitting a simplified application

Applicants can apply online via the secure MyGuichet.lu platform, accessible 24/7.

After logging in to their private eSpace with their LuxTrust product or electronic identity card, the owner/holder of the vehicle needs to specify:

  • the registration number;
  • the chassis number;
  • the validity status of their roadworthiness inspection certificate;
  • their full contact details.

The document is signed electronically. The application is then forwarded directly to the SNCA, which sends the owner a vehicle registration certificate and a temporary tax stamp that is valid for 30 days.

Submitting a hardcopy (paper) application

The applicant can submit the request using the application form for a vehicle registration certificate.

The completed and signed form, along with a copy of an identity document, must then be sent to the SNCA. To do so, the owner/holder of the vehicle may:

  • send their application by post to SNCA - BP 23 / L-5201 Sandweiler; or
  • arrange an appointment and go to the SNCA in person, with the form and their ID card; or
  • send their application by email to info@snca.lu.

They will receive a registration certificate and a temporary tax stamp that is valid for 30 days.

A third party may complete the procedure at the premises of the SNCA, but in such a case the person must present:

  • a power of attorney (French, Pdf, 300 Kb) issued by the owner/holder of the vehicle; and
  • the registration certificate application form, completed and signed by the owner/holder; and
  • a copy of the vehicle owner's/holder's identity document; and
  • the third party's own identity document.

Technical inspection

A technical inspection is not compulsory if the roadworthiness inspection certificate is still valid.
